I started blogging back in 1998. At first, I had no blog engine, just a static site that I was able to post my thoughts on in chronological order. A few years later, I discovered a couple of engines made for blogging. I thought it was awesome. I could now post my thoughts and have people comment on them. It was like having a conversation with a diverse crowd. I enjoyed the varying opinions and even though the debates would occasionally get heated, I wouldn't have it any other way. I learned a lot and changed my positions occasionally because of the comments I received. I really feel like I grew as a person by engaging in these debates.
Fast forward ten years and blogging has changed. Everyone and their dog has a blog. This could be a good thing except that I have noticed that, more frequently, people who write blogs don't want to hear differing opinions in their comments. I think this is what has made blogging so boring for me. I get so sick of reading blog comments, whether they are on my site or another one and seeing the homogeneous lovefest. They might as well have a template that you can click that says something like this:
[ this is good ] Great post! [insert anecdotal personal experience that supports writer's point of view ]
Now, there is nothing wrong with showing the writer a little love any more than there is to fire off an opposing view. The crux is that commenting has become a treacherous ground. One contrary word and the writer will wield his administrator staff and with godlike fury use one of the many tools at his disposal. You can have your comment deleted, altered or if you have really given the writer grief, the all-powerful blocking from commenting.
I understand that their needs to be a tool to block people from doing things such as spamming your site or if someone is grossly abusive to the writer or another commenter. I have used this tool a handful of times but only for extreme cases and, to my recollection, that has only been with spammers. Where I see the problem with the current system on most blog engines is that the blog writer tends to use the blocking mechanism to silence those that challenge their word as the Gospel of [smugly crafty blogging pseudonym].
Don't like what someone has to say? Defend your position. Can't defend your position? Consider that the other person may have a point. Remember, blogging is for engaging others. Differing views can only make you grow intellectually. Debate with them, engage them, don't dismiss them. Dissent is what makes life interesting.
